What is PDF Redaction?
Redaction is the process of permanently removing or obscuring sensitive information from a document before sharing it. In a redacted PDF, sensitive content appears as solid black bars — and crucially, the underlying text is completely removed, not just visually covered.
Proper redaction is essential when sharing legal documents, medical records, financial statements, or any document containing personal data that shouldn't be visible to the recipient.
⚠️ Critical: Simply drawing a black rectangle over text in a PDF editor does NOT redact it — the text is still there underneath and can be selected, copied, or revealed by removing the overlay. True redaction permanently removes the underlying content.
How to Redact a PDF with PDFMagik

Apply and download

💡 Tip: Always verify the redacted PDF after downloading by trying to select or copy the redacted areas. If the text is truly gone, you won't be able to select anything beneath the black bars.
What Should Be Redacted?

Redaction vs. Removing Pages
Redact when you want to keep the page but hide specific information — the page remains, the sensitive content is gone. Remove pages when the entire page contains sensitive content and the page itself shouldn't exist in the shared version. Both tools are available free on PDFMagik.
