Why Unlock a PDF?
PDF passwords serve an important purpose — but sometimes they get in the way. You might have a PDF you protected yourself and want to share freely, a document with printing or copying restrictions that you need to lift, or a file where the password is no longer needed. Unlocking removes the password so the PDF can be opened, shared, and used without restrictions.
⚠️ Legal Notice: PDF unlocking should only be used on documents you own or have explicit permission to unlock. Two Types of PDF Locks
Open Password Lock
The PDF cannot be opened without a password. To unlock it, you must know the current password. Once you enter it and remove the protection, the PDF opens freely for anyone.
Permissions Lock (Restrictions)
The PDF opens normally but printing, copying, or editing is restricted. To remove these restrictions, you need the owner/permissions password. Once removed, all actions become available.

💡 Tip: If you need to remove printing or copying restrictions but the document opens without a password, the permissions password may be different. Try leaving the password field blank first — some PDFs have restrictions but no open password.

What if You Forgot the Password?
If you have genuinely lost the password to your own document, options are limited. Strong AES-256 encryption cannot be brute-forced in any reasonable timeframe. Your best option is to try variations of passwords you remember — adding numbers, capitals, or symbols you typically use. There is no legitimate bypass for a truly forgotten password on a strongly encrypted PDF.
For PDFs with weak or no encryption (older PDF versions using 40-bit or 128-bit RC4), some password recovery tools may be able to help — but this is not guaranteed and should only be used on your own documents.
